A Great Floridian

Florida Guard Members, our Civilian Workforce, Families, and Supporters:

Last week over 700 NGA-FL members and families attended our Annual State Conference with a unified purpose of “Sustaining the Momentum” the Florida National Guard has achieved over the last decade! We were honored to have Governor Rick Scott, Gen. (Ret) Craig McKinley, and State Representatives Renuart and Smith attend the conference. We appreciate their support as they represent our Soldiers and Airmen at the state and national level.

During the Conference, the Governor presented the “Great Floridian” Award to Gen. McKinley for his service to the state and nation. Gen. McKinley made history at the beginning of 2012 when he became the first National Guardsman to serve as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He demonstrated tremendous leadership throughout his service, and we are honored to call him one of our own.

Many of you have noted the news reports this week that indicated that the Pentagon may cut the of number of furlough days this Fiscal Year to as few as six or eight. While we would welcome an end to the furlough, at this time, we have no official word that the furlough will be discontinued prior to the end of the fiscal year. Encouragingly, these national reports do provide clear indication that our voices are being heard loud and clear in Washington. We commend our Governor for his continual calls to stop the furlough this year and Florida U.S. Representative Rich Nugent’s sponsorship of a bill to prevent furloughs of our military technicians next year. Progress is being made!
