Hi, I’m Governor Rick Scott. As we enter a new year, we are headed in the right direction, but I understand that we still have a long way to go. As Governor, I constantly think about parents struggling to find jobs and families making $40,000 per year, struggling to make ends meet. Since December 2010, Florida has created nearly 175,000 private-sector jobs. In that time, our state has had the largest drop in unemployment in the country. Think about the families that are now better able to care for their children. I will not rest until every Floridian who wants a job, can get one.
We have also taken the steps to ensure that Florida’s students can get a great education. In the coming months, I will work with the Florida Legislature to implement my College and Career FIRST agenda. This plan puts our students first by working to increase K-12 education funding. It also puts a system in place that supports our teachers through a $250 supply card, and professional development programs. I have also issued a challenge for colleges in Florida to offer an affordable 4-year degree program to students for $10,000 or less in a high-demand job field.
My wife and I put ourselves through college. We would not have been able to do it with tuition as high as it is today. We must make our colleges more affordable for Florida families. I hope you and your family have a Happy Holiday Season and a wonderful New Year.
2013 is going to be a great year as we continue to create jobs and strengthen our education system to put Florida back to work.
