This has been a great year for Florida families. I would like to thank every one of our state employees for their hard work and dedication in making Florida the best state in the nation to live, work and raise a family. During this holiday season, I hope you have time to reflect on all of the great accomplishments we have achieved in 2013. Our unemployment rate has fallen to 6.7 percent, our fourth graders rank among the best in the world in reading, we are moving more than half of the people with critical needs off of the APD waiver waiting list, and we are on pace for a 43-year crime low in our state.

I know with the continued work of our state employees, in 2014 we will continue to be successful and create an opportunity economy in Florida that will support jobs for generations to come.

In recognition and sincere thanks for your dedication, I have directed the Secretary of the Department of Management Services to close all state executive buildings on December 24, 2013. Employees not required to work that day will be granted paid administrative leave. Because there are essential services that the state must provide, those employees who are required to work on December 24 will be permitted to take an equivalent amount of administrative leave within the next six months.

From my family to yours, happy holidays.
