Florida Guard Team,

April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM). The Department of Defense has chosen to keep the theme “Protecting Our People Protects Our Mission.” This month is an opportunity to highlight our efforts to care for survivors and innovative ways we are working to infuse prevention practices into our daily mission. Sexual assault destroys unit cohesion and threatens the readiness of our formations by eroding bonds of trust that make the Florida National Guard strong.

This year, the FLNG introduced initiatives to better protect our force by addressing bullying/hazing and providing training on the integration of transgender service members. We’ve also implemented a plan to enhance response and prevention efforts specific to our military men. These actions are in keeping with the Profession of Arms by which we live, and instill in others, our values.

The Florida National Guard will observe SAAPM 2017 and the Month of the Military Child with the goal of raising public awareness and educating our force and communities on sexual violence and its prevention.  Each Service member — regardless of grade – can and should encourage behaviors that foster a climate of dignity and respect, and in doing so, help ensure our readiness to complete our mission.

I join leaders, units, advocates and communities across the State in taking action to prevent sexual violence in its many forms. The difference starts with you. Step up and step in to stop sexual assault.
