To all veterans – past and present, and their families – Thank You

Florida Guard Team,

I want to start off this weekend with a heartfelt THANK YOU to each of you who currently serves, those who previously served and those service members who have passed before us.

Veterans Day was officially recognized as a holiday following World War One.  Known as the “Great War” or the “War to End All Wars,” it shook the world for four years, and claimed 20 million lives.  The Armistice that finally brought peace was signed on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.   Since then, nations commemorate that momentous event and focus their attention on the heroism and sacrifice of all who have served.

Veterans represent the very best of America.  This includes our brave men and women serving in the Florida National Guard.  You are fathers, wives, sons, grandfathers……teachers, engineers, doctors, truck drivers construction workers, IT specialists……living in, and contributing to our communities and representing every culture and occupation of our state.  You are a remarkably diverse group of citizens- unified by a common commitment to the safety and security of our nation and state – and our American way of life.

Throughout the next few days, many of you have volunteered your time to support our local communities at luncheons, parades and various Veterans Day events.  I thank you for your commitment of your personal time to participate in these activities that honor all veterans.

I’m hopeful that most are able to relax with families and reflect upon the greatness of our nation – and those patriots who made it possible.  There are a number of planned activities to recognize our veterans, and many businesses that are supporting veterans through discounted programs and services.  I’ve attached (below) a newsletter from our Transition Assistance Office that identifies some of these Veterans Day “specials,” plus many other services for our uniformed men and women.  In addition to these, there are 2 other events that I want to bring to your attention:

–   Doolittle Raiders Final Toast:  3 of the 4 surviving members of this significant historical event have permitted this typically secretive and solemn event to be broadcast live on Saturday, 9 November at 1800 EST.  You can find information at http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2013/11/04/doolittle-raiders-toast-to-be-broadcast.html.

–  Florida Guard Foundation Concert:  The Foundation will host Montgomery Gentry at a concert on November 9th at the Keystone Heights Airport near Camp Blanding.  We encourage your support, as all proceeds will help the Foundation assist Florida Guard members and families.  You can find more information at http://www.flheroes.org/.

Finally, to all veterans — past and present, and their families — there is no tribute, no commemoration, no praise that can truly match the magnitude of your service and your sacrifice.   I thank you for all you do for our state, our nation and our citizens.  I could not be any prouder to serve with you.

Have a safe Veterans Day.
