Today marks the 377th birthday of the National Guard

Florida Guard Team,

Today marks the 377th birthday of the National Guard, and recognition of the contributions that our fellow Guardsmen have made since before the founding of our nation.  We have been there from the beginning, winning the hard-fought liberties that our citizens enjoy today.

As members of the National Guard, we are part of the oldest component of the armed forces of the United States, and one of the oldest military organizations in the world.  Although many things have changed over the years, the National Guard’s fundamental mission to defend America at home and abroad has remained steady.

In September 2015, the Florida National Guard will celebrate the 450th Anniversary of the Continent’s first use of militia to protect the settlement of St. Augustine, our Nation’s oldest continuously occupied city.  Recognition of these historic milestones serve to remind us of the sacred trust we have earned from our communities, state and nation.

I thank each of you and your families for your sustained commitment to preserving our legacy.  Happy Birthday, National Guard!
