Team Florida –
I deeply believe – without exaggeration – that our founders altered the course of human history 243 years ago in Philadelphia when they adopted the Declaration of Independence. In signing this document, they not only declared our sovereignty, but also asserted a list of self-evident truths and inalienable rights which in turn set our great nation on a new course, guided by the principles of liberty, freedom and equality. This Independence Day I encourage every one of you to take a moment to express gratitude for the tremendous blessing and opportunity we have each day to be part of this American experience.
We’ve come a long way as a nation in these 243 years. We have faced threats and challenges which have tested our resolve for the ideals we were founded upon. Some of our country’s most defining concepts – that all people are created equal, and that liberty is the birthright of each and every individual – are not inherent to mankind, and mustn’t be taken for granted. These precious beliefs are not guarantees – they are ideals, and we must actively demonstrate and defend them every day to ensure they live on.
As I look across our formations today, I see men and women who have come together to serve on behalf of those values that our founders laid out and which make this nation great. So this 4th of July, take a moment to celebrate our nation’s birth, and to remember the principles which we hold dear. Just as those men did 243 years ago, you have taken a stand for those beliefs, and for that, I thank each and every one of you.
Happy Independence Day!
