The Adjutant General of Florida

Major General John Haas is The Adjutant General of Florida. As the Adjutant General, he is the senior military advisor to the Governor, responsible for the overall management, readiness and mobilization of both U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force elements of the Florida National Guard.

General Haas has served in a variety of command and staff positions within the FLARNG. Prior to assuming this position, he was the Assistant Adjutant General – Army and the Commander of the Florida Army National Guard (FLARNG), and in command of more than 10,000 Soldiers with management authority over all FLARNG programs. He also served as the Director of Strategic Plans, Policies & Programs, for the Florida National Guard, where he served as the principal advisor to The Adjutant General and Joint Force Headquarters Staff concerning the formulation of strategic policies, plans, and programs. Immediately before that, he commanded the 53rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, which supports federal war-fighting missions as well as Florida’s response to natural disasters and civil disturbances.

General Haas has completed three combat tours, two in Southwest Asia and one in Grenada. His other key assignments include multiple company-level commands, Battalion Operations Officer, Squadron Executive Officer and Squadron Commander of the 1-153rd Cavalry Squadron. He also served as the FLARNG Assistant Chief of Staff and State Mobilization Officer.

General Haas graduated from Florida State University and received his commission from the Officer Candidate School at Ft. Benning, Georgia in 1990 following four years of enlisted service in the regular Army as an Infantryman. General Haas’ military education includes, Ranger, Airborne and Pathfinder Schools; Infantry Basic and Advanced Courses; the U.S. Command and General Staff College; the Pre-Command Course, and the Army War College where he received a Master of Science Degree (MS) in Strategic Studies.

General Haas’ awards include the Combat Infantry Badge (with Silver Star), Army Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal (with Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster), Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal (with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (with 4 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters), Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (with 2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters), National Defense Service Medal (with Bronze Service Star), Iraq Campaign Medal (with 2 Bronze Service Stars), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal (with 2 Bronze Service Stars), Armed Forces Reserve Medal (with Silver Hourglass and “M” Device).

Other achievements include: Frank L. Lillyman Award, Lowry Leadership Award, General Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award, Order of Hamby, Order of Saint Maurice, and Draper Leadership Award.
